A poetic presentation of The Parables of Jesus, together with the Gospel passages from both the Authorized Version and The New English Bible. Inspired directly by the parables of Jesus, this book of poems, crystal clear in meaning and deeply communicative in content, brings the reader closer to these teachings of our Lord. In the first section of this book, Thomas Clifford Lane’s poems follow the presentation of Scriptural verses from the New English Bible translation. Likewise, in the second section of this book, his poems follow the presentation of relevant verses from the Authorized Version, (The King James Version), of the Bible Here you will find in simple, moving verse, thirty-five parables—the words spoken by Jesus to the Samaritan woman at the well are included because of their parabolic nature—all familiar, all greatly loved, and all interpreted with a depth of feeling and understanding to which the discerning reader will respond. The parable of the two houses, one built upon rock, the other upon sand; of the treasure found in a field; of a net cast into the sea; of the difficulty caused by riches; of the ten talents; of the ten virgins, five wise, five foolish; of the hiring of labourers (Jesus’ reply to Peter telling why “the last shall be first, and the first last”); and of the Good Shepherd (“who giveth his life for his sheep”), are presented in inspiring poetic form. As one reads this verse he becomes newly aware of the never-changing truths of our Lord’s messages to man: the drama of “An Hundred Sheep” and the shepherd’s joy when the lost one was found; of the Prodigal Son, and the father’s joyous reception of the wayward one upon his return; and of the Good Samaritan whose generosity answered for all time the lawyer’s question to Jesus: “Who is my neighbour”Thomas Lane, a Sunday-school teacher, feels that the parables of our Lord are not used as much as they should be in Christian teachings in the churches. With these poems, stemming directly from his study of the parables and his reverence for their truths, Mr. Lane moves to supply that lack.
